AIMA and Cowen produced an update to ongoing research of the global emerging manager (described as those running up to $500m AuM) market to better understand how they are managing their business today, compared to 2017 when a similar survey was conducted. This latest iteration, conducted in Q4 2021, demonstrates both continuing trends and interesting changes across the universe of next-generation managers. During this session, we will discuss the findings of this report.

Today, there are many ways of starting an asset management business and this will depend on several factors including amount of start-up capital available, appetite for autonomy, how quickly a product needs to be launched and the intended culture that is to be created.  The panel will discuss the pros and cons of the current options and how the early-stage decision can impact their business in the long-term.

Next generation managers often look to friends and family money to get their businesses off the ground.  Attracting investors outside of that group, from family offices to institutional seeders, requires a dedicated asset raising strategy.  This panel will discuss the different ways of implementing that strategy, from getting in front of those investors to closing an allocation.
