Karl Wachter

Karl Wachter is a Partner and the General Counsel of Magnetar Capital, where he is a member of the firm’s Management, Operations and Valuation Committees.  Prior to joining Magnetar over a decade ago, Karl served as Managing Director and General Counsel of Diamond Lake Investment Group (2007-2008), General Counsel of Amaranth Advisors L.L.C. (2001-2007) and Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. (2000-2001).  Karl began his legal career as an Associate in the derivatives practice group of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP.  He was elected in 2014 to the AIMA Council and has served as AIMA’s Chair since September 2020.  He holds a J.D., with honors, from the University of Chicago Law School, an M.A. from the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University and a B.F.A., with honors, from New York University.
