Mark Flanagan

Chief Operating Officer, Backbone Capital, and Chair of the AIMA Next Generation Manager Group

Mark started his financial services career in 1994 working with investors, investment managers, funds and service providers. In particular with regards to advising on operations, governance, operational due diligence and structuring to attract and support institutional investors across all asset classes.

He has held various roles including COO of an investment manager, as well as senior roles with as an institutional investor and services provider within Operational Due Diligence, Risk, Fund Structuring, Operations and Governance. He has had oversight of assets in excess of $1.5 trillion. He has uniquely acted on behalf of both investment managers and investors to reduce risk and ensure best practices.

He has worked with over 500 investment managers and helped launch over 100 funds with start-up, emerging and institutional investment managers across all asset classes. He has lived and worked in Ireland, Cayman Islands, United Kingdom and South Africa.

He is actively involved in a number of industry initiatives working with other COOs, managers, service providers, industry organisations, the media and investors to create and implement operational best practices and transparency. In addition, he is a frequent speaker at conferences to promote these issues as well as teaching courses on due diligence to investment managers and investors.

He is Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland and a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst.
